Brushing teeth when you have braces can be a challenge, but that doesn’t diminish the importance of excellent oral hygiene when you have braces. So what can you do?
Have the Right Tools
A rounded bristle toothbrush can be helpful to brush your teeth with braces. Get soft bristles and a small headed toothbrush so you can even get those hard to reach places, and avoid causing undue pressure on your braces. Be sure to use a fluoridated toothpaste approved by the ADA.
Also ask your Orthodontist about an Interdental brush that can help clean around the brackets and wires safely.
Learn Tips and Tricks From Your Orthodontist
Your Orthodontist would be happy to demonstrate how you can brush and floss, thoroughly removing plaque on your teeth and around your braces. Ask your Orthodontist for tips or tricks to brush your teeth with braces, so you can do the best job possible to prevent cavities while you are completing your braces treatments.
Be Diligent and Consistent
Brushing 2 times a day is normally recommended for every dental patient. But do expect to spend extra time on the brushing and flossing, as getting around your braces may be more labor intensive. Don’t skimp though, when you have braces it is especially important to keep clean and healthy teeth, and prevent cavities. It can be hard to brush your teeth with braces, but the end result of straight, clean, healthy teeth is definitely worth it!
