Getting used to your new braces can take time. Don’t get discouraged! We’ve got some tips and tricks to help speed up the process and keep you comfortable in the meantime. Read on to learn more.

Your First Days with Braces

Your first few days with braces are typically the most challenging. Having braces on your teeth is a new experience and they might feel bulky or uncomfortable. But don’t get discouraged, because you’ll get used to them soon and might even forget that they are there!

If getting used to your new braces is feeling difficult, your orthodontist can give you a special type of wax that you can place over any areas of your braces that feel uncomfortable. This can help make things easier until your mouth adjusts.

Eating soft foods like pasta, mashed potatoes, or pudding and drinking soup or smoothies can also be helpful to ensure that you get adequate nutrition without irritating your mouth while you are still getting used to your new braces.

If you can, try to also keep your schedule flexible and sparse the first few days after braces so you won’t be required to talk a lot until you have time to adjust. It’s the perfect excuse to marathon your favorite TV show you’ve been wanting to catch up on!

The Next Few Weeks

Over the next few weeks, your braces will usually start to feel more comfortable and you’ll start to build a routine of taking care of your braces. Brushing and flossing might take a little extra time in the early weeks, so make sure to set aside enough time in the morning to get ready for the day.

Taking good care of your braces might take some getting used to, but it’s important to keep your teeth in top shape for the exciting day when you’ll get your braces off and see your amazing new smile!

Your Amazing New Smile!

If you start to feel discouraged in the early days when you’re still getting used to your new braces, try to envision what your new smile will look like! It will help to remind you that it will all be worth it, so you’ll feel more encouraged as you adjust to your new braces.
